Determined!

Hello and welcome back to the Dorchester Middle School Blog!

I hope you have all had a good week? It'll be no surprise to you that it's been another busy one.

You may be wondering why this week's banner picture is a snail? On my way to work on Friday, I had quite a stressful journey as there was a diversion due to power cables being down in the road. My journey was taking a lot longer that I had planned and anticipated and the stress levels were high.

Whilst quietly fuming in the enormous traffic jam, I noticed that there was a snail on the bonnet of my car. He must have been there since I set off from Blandford and there we were, half way to Dorchester and he was, quite literally, clinging on for dear life. He had come out of his shell and was looking around his new surroundings very possibly with an impending sense of doom.

As we continued on our journey, he kept adjusting his position on my bonnet so that he stayed on board. I started to feel quite attached to this rather resilient snail and admired his perseverance. I then realised that we were about to join the dual carriageway and all his hard work could be for nothing.

I decided that, to give the snail the fighting chance that he deserved, I would actually slow down. To my relief this worked and he also survived the following three roundabouts.

When we finally got to school, I decided that this brave little snail was going to be this week's banner page. He was determined to stay on the bonnet of my car and did so against the odds. He didn't give up. How many times have we decided to give up when things have got tricky? We all have at some time or another.

Let's try and be more like the snail who is now (hopefully) living his best life in the staff car park at Dorchester Middle School.

Hello Yellow

This Friday (8th October) we will be marking Sunday's World Mental Health Day by wearing something yellow. As mentioned in last week's Blog, we are asking the children to substitute an item of their uniform for something yellow.

This is not a fundraising event, this is to show our support for each other and to acknowledge how important it is that we look after our mental health and well being.

This event has been organised by Young Minds who supports children with their mental health. Here is their excellent website:

https://www.youngminds.org.uk/

There is a lot of fantastic support and advice that is well worth looking at.

The Snowball Effect

In our PSHCEE lesson this week, we had a go at an activity called 'Snowballing'. It involved the children writing three facts about themselves on a piece of scrap paper, screwing it up and then throwing it around the classroom. The children then had to pick up a 'snowball' and work out who it belonged to.

It was really interesting to see how well 6RS knew each other!

Non Uniform Day

This Thursday (7th October) we will be holding a uniform day to raise funds for Epilepsy Action. For just £1 the children can wear their won (school appropriate) clothes whilst raising money for this excellent charity in the process.

Anti-Bullying Assembly

As mentioned last week, this Monday (4th October) the school will be participating in The Big Anti-Bullying Assembly. The assembly will shown during the children's Homebase time with the opportunity to do lots of follow up work.

Worth a Mention Children

Massive congratulations to the children who are on this week's Worth a Mention Boards.

I am so proud of you all.

Let's start with Year Five this week:

Now for Year Six:

Well done everyone, you deserve a HUGE pat on the back!

Lost anything?

We have only been back a month but my goodness me, I have never seen so many abandoned pieces of clothing! This is not exclusive to Year Five, it's right across the board!

We try our absolute best to reunite the items with their owners but as the majority of things we find do not have a name this makes the task virtually impossible. Gone are the days when children can simply sniff their jumpers as a form of identification!

Please, please make sure that items of uniform are named, Thank you!

After School Clubs are back!

Mr Roberts and his team in the PE Department are looking forward to welcoming the children back to clubs this week.

This year, the children have had to sign up for the Clubs that they are attending. I know that everyone is looking forward to getting started. Have fun!

Growing together

I spied this rather lovely Class Tree in Mr Duffy's classroom and had to share it. I love the way that 5KD have created the trunk. There are lots of lovely trees in the Homebase Rooms.

Good Luck Miss Clements.

You would have thought that one marathon this year would have been enough but not for our resilient Miss Clements! We wish her luck with Sunday's London Marathon and I promise not to be unkind to her when I see her attempting the stairs on Monday morning!

Well, that's it for this week. I hope that the week ahead is a good one for you and I will look forward to seeing you back here next week. Remember that when things get tough think of that snail...

Mrs Ray

(who channelled her inner snail on Saturday by doing the soggiest Park Run known to man!)
