Storm in a tea cup

Hello and welcome back to the Dorchester Middle School Blog!

Wow! What a week!

So much has happened, I don't know where to start!

On Friday, I whizzed around the area to visit the lovely children from St Mary's Charminster who are joining us in September. I then hotfooted it over to Damers with Miss Sharpe to meet with the utterly fabulous Year Four teachers to find out about the utterly fabulous children who will also be transferring to us. Our Year Five cohort are going to brilliant, I am sure of it.

I can't begin to tell you how utterly fabulous it was to throw open the doors of the school on Saturday for our Community Open Morning. Over 75 families of Year Four children visited the school which is terrific but more of that later.

So, without further a do, Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you this week's post...

Storm Exhibition

The whole school were able to preview the exhibition on Friday afternoon and they were not disappointed. Here are a few pictures from the show:

Open Morning

As mentioned above, we welcomed our new and current families into school to see the Storm exhibition and to have a look around the school. Our brilliant Year Five children were our tour guides for the morning and they did a magnificent job.

Our marvellous PTFA served teas and coffees to our parents - it was so good to see them. I didn't get to see them whilst they were in action but there was much excitement at the end of the morning as we had access to our new cupboard. It's the little things in life!

Our superb Year Sixes came into school to help Mrs Scott in the Technology Corridor. The smell of baking filtered the air and there were several Year Four children proudly clutching pieces of wood that they had cut using a machine!

Our Storm Exhibition was a very popular destination on Saturday:

Year Four Children and their Families

For me, the absolute highlight of the morning was meeting so many Year Four children and their families. I could see a lot of anxious faces and that was just the parents!

We hope that by having a look round the school, speaking to the Year Five children and meeting a few key members of staff that everyone felt a bit more reassured and excited
about the transition to DMS.

I was so proud of our school on Saturday, Team DMS is a force to be reckoned with!

Conscience Alley

As we continue to read Kensuke's Kingdom in Year Five, we are exploring more about the main characters of the book.

One of the things we have debated is if Michael and his family should really embark on a voyage all around the world. We looked at reasons for and against so that we could write a balanced argument.

To help us to decide, I divided the class into two so they could represent 'for' or 'against'. We then went into the corridor - the children 'for' down one side and those 'against' opposite. I then took the role of the protagonist, Michael and listened to both sides of the argument.

I won't tell you what 'I' decided as I still haven't told the children!

Worth a Mention Children

Huge congratulations to ALL of the children who found their names on this week's WAM boards. I spied that 5MW are all on there as they have all been athletics super stars.

Let's start with Year Six this week:

Now for Year Five:

Well done to each and everyone of the chosen children - we are all extremely proud of you!

PTFA Summer Fair

All of our exciting plans for this year's Summer Fair are coming together nicely! Hopefully, you have received the entry forms for our Show Tent competitions - Mrs Whiting has done an outstanding job hasn't she?

We still need parent volunteers to help on the day. If you can help us out then please email the PTFA directly:

ptfa.dms@gmail.com

Also, does anyone have any hay or straw bales that we could borrow on the day? If so, please email the PTFA on the above email address.

Thank you!

Well, that's it for the week - I will look forward to seeing you back here next week when, hopefully, the Blog will go back to it's original weekend publication.

Have a good week everyone!

Mrs Ray

(who took part in the Tarrant Valley 10km on Sunday. The word 'hilly' is putting it politely!)
